It is a network, not a single compulsory walk

NParks describes the Southern Ridges as about 10 kilometres of green open spaces connecting Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark and Kent Ridge Park. That does not mean every visitor needs to walk the whole thing end to end.

I would choose a section around your weather, time and knees. The classic first-timer sequence is HarbourFront up through Mount Faber, across Henderson Waves and into Telok Blangah Hill; a longer walk can continue through Forest Walk, Alexandra Arch, HortPark and toward Kent Ridge.

Henderson Waves is the headline, not the whole route

The 274-metre Henderson Waves is Singapore’s tallest pedestrian bridge, with its wave-shaped ribs forming shaded alcoves. It links Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill and gives the walk its most recognisable piece of architecture.

NParks recommends morning for cooler conditions or evening for the bridge lighting. The LED lighting runs from 7pm to 2am daily, so sunset can be a smart compromise between heat and atmosphere.

Three sensible ways to do it

Short: start around Mount Faber or Telok Blangah, cross Henderson Waves and explore the hill park before exiting. This gets the signature bridge without committing half a day.

Medium: HarbourFront to Henderson Waves, Forest Walk, Alexandra Arch and HortPark gives a satisfying mix of climb, elevated greenery and gardens.

Long: continue through the wider Southern Ridges toward Kent Ridge or use NParks’ longer route options linking toward Labrador. Official DIY routes commonly budget several hours, so treat old “two-hour full walk” claims with suspicion.

Heat, rain and the best time of day

Singapore humidity is the main difficulty, not technical hiking. Start early, or use late afternoon if you are comfortable finishing near dusk. Midday is possible but much less pleasant on exposed climbs and bridges.

Carry water and sun protection, and use a weather app before setting out. Thunderstorms can arrive hard and fast. After heavy rain, boardwalks, steps and earth sections can be slippery even when the main paved connectors are open.

Access, surfaces and exit points

This is not one uniformly accessible path. Some park connectors and bridge approaches are smooth, while routes such as the climb from HarbourFront via Marang Trail involve stairs and elevation. If mobility is a concern, start from a park or road access that avoids the steepest approach and check the current NParks maps.

The useful thing about the network is that you can bail out. HarbourFront, roads around Telok Blangah/Henderson Road, HortPark/Alexandra Road and the Kent Ridge side all provide different entry or exit strategies; you do not need to retrace the entire walk.

Opening hours and current restrictions

Telok Blangah Hill Park is currently open 24 hours, but its Earth Trail should not be entered after 7pm. Other segments can have maintenance or safety closures, so check NParks notices when a specific boardwalk or trail is essential to your plan.

Night access does not mean the whole route is equally pleasant or well suited to a first visit after dark. For most travellers, daylight plus Henderson Waves around sunset is the easier option.

What to combine with the walk

Mount Faber can pair with HarbourFront or Sentosa, while HortPark and Kent Ridge work better as a nature-focused half day. If you extend toward Labrador, allow enough time for the extra coastal and nature-reserve segment rather than treating it as a quick detour.

I would not schedule a dressy dinner immediately after a full humid ridgeline walk unless your hotel shower is part of the itinerary. Singapore’s urban trails are very civilised, but the climate still wins.

TATS Man verdict

The Southern Ridges is one of Singapore’s best examples of a city walk that feels greener than the map suggests. The trick is to stop treating 10 kilometres as a challenge badge: pick the section that fits the weather, see Henderson Waves, and leave enough energy to enjoy the forest rather than merely complete it.
