Flying into Changi
Most international travellers arrive at Changi Airport. Check the terminal on your airline booking rather than assuming all carriers use the same building; transfers between terminals and a visit to Jewel add time. After immigration and baggage claim, the MRT is the budget default, while taxis and app-booked private-hire cars are more convenient with luggage or after a late arrival.
The airport branch joins the East West Line at Tanah Merah, so most city journeys require one change. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes to a central hotel once walking and the transfer are included. Public transport does not run all night: if your flight lands near the final train, check the journey planner before leaving the arrivals hall.
Before you fly
Confirm that your passport, visa status and onward-travel evidence meet the current Immigration & Checkpoints Authority requirements. An entry visa, where required, is permission to travel to the checkpoint rather than a guaranteed stay. The length of your visit is determined by the electronic Visit Pass issued on entry, so check that record after immigration.
Crossing overland from Malaysia
Road traffic uses either the Woodlands Causeway or Tuas Second Link. Cross-border buses serve the Johor Bahru corridor, but timetables, boarding points and operating hours vary by operator. The Causeway can become very slow before weekends, public holidays and major events; leave a generous buffer rather than scheduling a flight or timed attraction immediately afterwards.
The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System is still under construction, with passenger service targeted for the end of 2026. Until it opens, do not plan around the advertised five-minute train journey. KTM's limited Shuttle Tebrau and cross-border buses are the public-transport alternatives, subject to current tickets and schedules.
Visas & the SG Arrival Card
Visa requirements depend on the passport or travel document you hold; use ICA's current list rather than a generic visa-free claim. The SG Arrival Card is separate from a visa. Most travellers must submit it within the three days before arrival, including the day they enter Singapore, with limited official exemptions.
Submit the SG Arrival Card only through ICA's free e-service or MyICA app. Commercial sites that charge to file it are not endorsed by ICA. Save the acknowledgement with your travel documents.
Customs, on arrival
Check current Singapore Customs allowances before packing alcohol, tobacco, medicines or high-value purchases. Prohibited and controlled goods rules are enforced at the border; e-cigarettes and chewing gum are among items that can surprise visitors. When uncertain, declare the item or obtain approval before travel rather than relying on anecdotes.
Connections and separate tickets
On one through-ticket, follow the airline's transfer instructions and confirm whether baggage is checked to the final destination. With separate tickets, assume you may need to clear immigration, collect bags and check in again. Build a conservative buffer: Changi is efficient, but terminal changes, queues and a delayed inbound flight can erase a short connection.
Choosing your airport transfer
The MRT is inexpensive and predictable for light luggage, but it may involve a platform change and a walk from the city station. A taxi uses the official rank and runs by meter with applicable surcharges. Private-hire cars are booked through an app and use designated pick-up areas. Large groups should compare a larger vehicle with two standard cars rather than assuming everyone and every suitcase will fit.
Airport buses are useful only when their route suits the accommodation. Hotel shuttles are not universal, so confirm directly with the property. Whatever the mode, use the correct terminal pick-up point and ignore unsolicited transport offers.
Arriving by cruise or ferry
Regional ferries use terminals including HarbourFront and Tanah Merah, while cruise ships may use Marina Bay Cruise Centre or Singapore Cruise Centre. The name matters: the terminals are not interchangeable. Confirm it on the ticket, arrive before the operator's check-in cut-off and allow time for immigration. A hotel near Marina Bay is not necessarily walkable from the cruise centre with luggage.
A low-stress arrival plan
Before departure, save your accommodation address, complete the SG Arrival Card in the valid window and download any onward tickets. On arrival, connect to airport Wi-Fi, check the live route to your hotel, and choose MRT only if service is still running comfortably. Keep a payment card accessible for transport, and do not schedule a non-refundable activity immediately after landing.
