If the Bukit Panjang LRT is part of your normal Sunday routine, put both dates in the calendar now. The closure affects the LRT service itself, so residents who usually rely on it for the neighbourhood leg between Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang and the estates around the loop will need to switch to buses.
LTA has published two main alternatives: regular bus services 922, 972 and 976, plus a dedicated BPLRT Shuttle Bus Service B. The shuttle will run from Choa Chu Kang towards Bukit Panjang in the same direction as normal BPLRT Service B, at about 5–10 minute intervals. Standard LRT fares apply on the shuttle.
01 · Which dates are affected?
LTA lists two September closure dates for Bukit Panjang LRT: Sunday 20 September and Sunday 27 September 2026. The agency says the shutdowns are required for the final phase of the BPLRT renewal programme.
That makes this a resident-first transport story rather than a general Singapore rail disruption. If you do not use the Bukit Panjang LRT, most normal journeys elsewhere in the network are not affected by this notice.
02 · How Shuttle Bus B works
The dedicated replacement service is called BPLRT Shuttle Bus Service B. LTA says it will operate in the same direction as BPLRT Service B, travelling from Choa Chu Kang to Bukit Panjang.
Its planned frequency is about every 5 to 10 minutes, and standard LRT fares will apply. The direction detail matters: this is not simply a bus copy of both LRT loops. If your normal journey uses the opposite direction around the estate loop, compare the shuttle with the regular bus alternatives before leaving home.
03 · Regular buses 922, 972 and 976 are the other official alternatives
LTA specifically points commuters to services 922, 972 and 976 as regular-bus alternatives during the closures. Which one is best depends on where you start and finish, so there is no single replacement route that is fastest for everyone.
For short neighbourhood trips, a direct regular bus may be simpler than travelling to an interchange to join the shuttle. For longer trips, residents should plan the entire journey rather than only the missing LRT leg.
04 · The closure notice is for the LRT, not the wider MRT network
Bukit Panjang remains connected to the Downtown Line, while Choa Chu Kang remains on the North–South Line. LTA’s closure notice is specifically for the Bukit Panjang LRT.
That distinction is useful for both residents and visitors: the two interchange areas still provide rail connections into the wider MRT network, but the local LRT link and loop journeys are the part you need to replace.
05 · How I would plan those two Sundays
- Add buffer time. A bus replacement involves road traffic, boarding time and potentially a less direct route than the LRT.
- Check the direction before boarding Shuttle B. It follows Service B, so do not assume your usual loop direction is reproduced.
- Compare a direct regular bus. Services 922, 972 and 976 may be more convenient for some estate-to-interchange trips.
- Use live information. LTA directs commuters to MyTransport.SG and operator channels for current service details.
- Leave extra time for appointments. Sunday medical, family, religious, work or airport connections are the trips least suited to discovering the closure at the platform.
06 · Why the BPLRT is still undergoing renewal work
The Bukit Panjang LRT opened in 1999 and has been undergoing a broad renewal programme covering vehicles, signalling, power and operating systems. LTA says the September closures are to facilitate the final phase of that programme.
The wider renewal is designed to improve reliability and the commuter experience. Previous LTA updates have described new and upgraded light rail vehicles, a Communications-Based Train Control signalling system, power-system upgrades and operations-control work as parts of the programme.
07 · What residents around Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang should watch
The biggest practical pressure point is likely to be the transfer between neighbourhood journeys and the two main interchange areas. Residents who usually treat the LRT as a quick feeder should expect that the bus alternative may add walking, waiting or a less direct loop.
If mobility, prams, luggage or heat exposure matter to your household, check the exact boarding point before travelling rather than assuming the replacement stops in precisely the same place as the LRT station entrance.
08 · Does this matter to visitors?
Most visitors staying in the central city, Marina Bay, Orchard, Chinatown or around Changi will never need the BPLRT. The closure becomes relevant if your accommodation, friends, event or itinerary takes you into Bukit Panjang or Choa Chu Kang and you planned to use the LRT for the final local leg.
Visitors using the Downtown Line to Bukit Panjang should not read this as a closure of the Downtown Line itself. The practical problem is the onward LRT connection.
