Early trading port
Long before Raffles, the island was a trading settlement known as Temasek, positioned on the strait linking Indian Ocean and South China Sea trade routes.
Colonial period
Stamford Raffles established a British trading post in 1819, rapidly growing the port into one of the region's most important, and drawing waves of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan migration that shaped the island's demographics.
Independence
Singapore joined Malaysia briefly in 1963, then separated in 1965 to become fully independent — a moment the country marks every August 9 as National Day.
Modern Singapore
Decades of rapid development transformed the island from a developing port city into one of the world's wealthiest nations by most measures, while retaining the multiracial character shaped by its colonial and trading history.
